The BJP's 29 victorious MLAs from the recently concluded J&K assembly elections received a warm welcome at the party headquarters here on Monday.
BJP UT chief Ravinder Raina greeted all 29 new members, marking the highest number ever secured by the party in the history of J&K. Raina described the occasion as a special moment for the party, expressing pride in the elected candidates' achievements.
“The people of J&K, especially those in the Jammu division, deserve special thanks from the BJP for giving us 29 MLAs, the largest number the party has ever won in the J&K assembly elections,” he said.
He credited the success to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the guidance of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
“It is due to the great leadership of PM Modi and the support of Home Minister Amit Shah and party President J.P. Nadda that we achieved this victory,” he added.
Raina announced that a meeting with all the winners would soon take place, attended by central observers Prahlad Joshi and Tarun Chugh. “After the legislative party meeting, the next steps in the process will be decided,” he stated.
The BJP will now need to select a leader for its legislative party in the new UT assembly.
Sources within the party indicate that Sunil Kumar Sharma, the MLA from the Padder-Nagseni constituency, and Devinder Rana, elected from the Nagrota constituency, are among the frontrunners for the position.
Raina himself was among the notable candidates to lose in this election, having been defeated in the Nowshera constituency of Rajouri district by National Conference candidate Surinder Choudhary.
As the party with the second-largest number of MLAs, the BJP is set to take the post of Leader of the Opposition in the J&K assembly.
The National Conference emerged as the single largest party in the recently concluded elections, securing 42 seats; the BJP received 29; Congress performed dismally with just 6; and the PDP faced its worst-ever defeat, winning only 3 seats.
The CPI(M), JKPC, and AAP each secured one seat. Additionally, there are seven independents, some of whom have decided to support the NC-Congress alliance.
