The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday announced Jiwan Gupta as its candidate for the upcoming Ludhiana West Assembly by-election, scheduled for June 19.
The decision came following approval from the BJP’s Central Election Committee. Gupta currently serves as the general secretary of the party's Punjab unit and is a member of its state core committee.
The Ludhiana West seat fell vacant after the death of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January this year. The counting of votes is set for June 23.
The AAP has nominated Rajya Sabha MP and industrialist Sanjeev Arora for the seat, while the Congress has fielded former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who previously represented the constituency in 2012 and 2017. Ashu was defeated by AAP's Gogi in the 2022 assembly polls by a margin of 7,512 votes.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has chosen lawyer Parupkar Singh Ghuman as its candidate.
According to the Election Commission, the last date to file nominations is June 2, with scrutiny scheduled for June 3 and the deadline for withdrawal on June 5.
