The Bharatiya Janata Party in Karnataka on Friday staged a demonstration here against the government bus fare hike.
The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday decided to hike the government bus fare by 15 per cent across all categories. This will come into effect from Sunday.
The move is expected to generate ₹74.85 crore monthly and about ₹784 crore annually, the government said.
The Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly R Ashoka led the agitation at the Kempegowda Bus Stand at Majestic.
The party leaders gave flowers to the passengers saying that they were consoling them from the additional burden fallen on them.
Speaking to reporters, Ashoka said the people are suffering due to the price rise in the state.
Later, the agitating BJP leaders were taken under preventive custody.
As per the order, Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil has said that the cabinet has decided to revise the bus fare of the four state transport corporations — KSRTC, NWKRTC, KKRTC and BMTC by 15 per cent.
According to him, the BMTC bus fares were increased on January 10, 2015 when the diesel prices were ₹60.90 per litre.
The Minister also underlined that 'Shakti' guarantee will continue.
Shakti offers free ride for Karnataka women in state-owned non-luxury buses across the state.
In the current fiscal, ₹5,015 crore has been earmarked for the 'Shakti' scheme, the Minister explained.
