A day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab, the BJP’s state core committee on Saturday passed a resolution thanking him, stating that the visit will help reinforce communal harmony in the state.
Modi is scheduled to visit Dera Ballan on Sunday to mark the 649th birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas. He will also launch the civil terminal at Halwara Airport and visit Adampur Airport, where he will rename it as Sri Guru Ravidas Ji Airport.
The BJP’s core panel meeting was organised here under the leadership of state president Sunil Jakhar.
Those present included national secretary Narinder Singh Raina, working state president Ashwani Sharma, national parliamentary board member Iqbal Singh Lalpura, and general secretary (organisation) Manthri Srinivasulu.
During the meeting, the party discussed its plans for the coming days and adopted two key resolutions, according to a party statement. Jakhar said the Prime Minister understands the sentiments of the people of Punjab and is coming to the state to pay tribute to Guru Ravidas on a day when the Union Budget will also be tabled in Parliament.
He said that the BJP’s core panel passed a resolution expressing gratefulness to the Prime Minister, noting that the visit would further promote communal harmony in Punjab.
Talking about the second resolution, Jakhar said that just before the Prime Minister’s visit, anti-national elements have issued bomb threats in Jalandhar, exposing the “failure” of the Punjab government and the police.
He said the BJP also passed a resolution condemning the state government for its inability to maintain law and order. He added that if such a security situation exists even ahead of country’s Prime Minister’s visit, “one can easily imagine the fear in which ordinary people of Punjab are living.”
Jakhar further stated that instead of deploying the police to maintain law and order, the Punjab government is using it to “silence opponents and curb media freedom.”
He said that the government will not be allowed to take away media freedom and the people’s right to free expression.
Jakhar accused Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann of being reduced to a mere “proxy” CM. Addressing AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, he said the party’s “decline” in Delhi began when details of the alleged Sheesh Mahal came to light, and now similar claims in Punjab are also “starting to surface.”
He said the people of Punjab have firmly decided that the party which came to power promising change has caused “serious damage” to Punjab, and in the next elections, they will vote it out to prevent further harm.
