The Bharatiya Janata Party's Jammu and Kashmir unit on Monday said it would file a defamation case against Chief Minister Omar Abdullah if he fails to issue a public apology for what it described as baseless allegations against the party of poaching legislators.
A party spokesperson, in a statement, said, “The party has sent a legal notice to Omar Abdullah by post/email, demanding that he either produce concrete evidence to support his allegations of poaching against the BJP or issue a public apology within a week."
The statement further said if Omar doesn’t issue an apology or fails to produce evidence within the given time, the party will initiate legal proceedings against him.
The spokesperson also threatened to file a defamation suit of Rs 100 crore over Omar's remarks alleging that the BJP was offering Rs 20–30 crore to MLAs for defection.
During a public address at Hazratbal last week, Omar alleged that the BJP was trying to bring down his government by engineering a split in his party. He said an elected member of his party had told him that he had been offered Rs 20–30 crore and a ministerial berth to switch sides to the saffron party.
