Leader of the Opposition and former BJP chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, Jai Ram Thakur, today welcomed the Himachal Pradesh High Court’s order for a CBI probe into the mysterious death of Vimal Negi, Chief Engineer-cum-General Manager of the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL), in March this year.
He said the BJP had been consistently demanding a CBI probe into the matter, and now the High Court has issued its order along similar lines, after reviewing all aspects of the investigation conducted by the SIT formed by the state government in response to a petition filed by Negi’s wife.
“There is a lot to probe in the HPPCL functioning and the mysterious death of the Chief Engineer. The independent inquiry by CBI probe will certainly bring out the truth, whether it is about the cause of death of Vimal Negi or about alleged corruption in the HPPCL that led to pressure tactics by the HPPCL high ups,” he said.
He further said that when the BJP had demanded a CBI inquiry during the last Vidhan Sabha session, the state government had claimed that a fair investigation was being conducted and that Negi’s family was satisfied with it.
“The government completely misled the House. In reality, Vimal Negi’s wife approached the court, expressing doubts about the investigation conducted by the local police. What is even more troubling is that the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) highlighted several points in his inquiry that the government has tried to suppress,” he added.
Thakur accused the Congress government of treating the entire matter with negligence from the moment Negi went missing
“In fact, when we demanded a CBI probe, the Chief Minister accused us of politicising the issue. However, the High Court has now made serious observations about the manner in which the SIT handled the investigation. The court also noted a lack of coordination within the police department during the inquiry.
Even more shocking is the revelation that a pen drive recovered from the body of the Chief Engineer was later formatted or had data deleted. The CBI will bring all of this to light through an impartial investigation,” he said.
Thakur concluded by stating that the BJP stands firmly with the family of Vimal Negi during this difficult time.
