Putting an end to speculations about a possible tie-up with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma said on Thursday that the party would contest the 2027 Assembly elections on its own.
His statement comes just days after state BJP president Sunil Jakhar had said that a BJP-SAD alliance was the need of the hour. He said this while warning that some harmful forces were returning in Punjab. He compared the situation to 1996, when the BJP-SAD alliance was first formed to protect communal harmony in the state.
Jakhar had referred to the original 1996 pact between the two parties as one that helped keep communal harmony in Punjab. The Akali Dal had left the BJP-led NDA in 2020 due to disagreements over the now-withdrawn three farm laws.
Ashwani Sharma said the BJP had already contested the 2022 Assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls on its own. Speaking to party workers at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan, he said the BJP would now contest all 117 Assembly seats in the next election.
He urged workers to start preparing on the ground and said that people had high expectations from the BJP, which had worked for Punjab’s progress over the years.
Calling the anti-sacrilege Bill passed by the AAP government a “political stunt,” Sharma said that if the ruling party was serious, it would have acted against those responsible for the 2015 sacrilege incidents, using existing laws.
