Punjab’s Ferozepur Cantonment runs 30-minute blackout drill amid heightened security alert.

A sense of unease settled over Ferozepur on Sunday evening as security agencies carried out a 30-minute blackout drill in the border town. The drill, held from 9:00 pm to 9:30 pm, was marked by the sounding of sirens, following which all lights were switched off as per an advisory issued by the Cantonment Board.

Residents had been informed about the drill in advance through a formal notice sent by the board, which advised them to stay indoors and maintain a complete lights-out during the specified period. Throughout the drill, sirens blared continuously while the police remained on high alert across the town, replicating a real-time emergency scenario.

The blackout drill was conducted against the backdrop of rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.

Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Deepshikha Sharma released a press note stating that the blackout was part of a regular security protocol in such situations and urged the locals not to panic. The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) facilitated the operation by cutting off power supply for the designated duration.

Despite the reassurances, a sense of apprehension has gripped the town. Many residents remain glued to news channels and social media for updates, and conversations echo a growing unease reminiscent of past conflict periods. Comparisons are being drawn to previous tense moments like the Kargil War and the post-Parliament attack times. Veteran locals recall similar atmospheres during the 1965 and 1971 wars.

Security has been tightened across Ferozepur. Vehicle checks have intensified at all entry points into the district, and armed security personnel are verifying identities, especially of those approaching the border. Army movements outside the cantonment have been restricted, and civilian access to the area has also been limited.

The BSF has increased border patrols, while the Punjab Police has set up barricades at key locations and enhanced surveillance. According to Deputy Inspector General Harmanbir Gill of Ferozepur Range, the police are closely monitoring anti-social elements, smugglers, and those with criminal records. Toll barriers are being scrutinised to prevent the leakage of movement details to hostile elements, and social media activity is under active observation.

Power supply was fully restored by 9:30 pm, marking the conclusion of the exercise. The authorities commended the public for their cooperation and emphasised the critical role such drills play in safeguarding both civilian and military readiness in sensitive border areas.
