Massive fire broke out in an underground gas pipeline at the Sector 36/37 light point in Chandigarh on Saturday evening, which led to panic among residents. Thick smoke and high flames were visible from a distance which disrupted traffic movement in the area.
The fire prompted an urgent response from emergency services.
Although officials are yet to confirm the exact cause, the fire is suspected to have erupted due to a leakage in the pipeline. As soon as the incident was reported, several fire tenders rushed to the spot and began firefighting operations.
The high pressure of gas in the pipeline led to significant challenges in controlling the blaze. Firefighters were struggling to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby areas.
