Panic spread across several court complexes in Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday after bomb threat emails were sent to courts in Shimla, Kullu, Nahan and Rampur. The threats led to mass evacuations and a quick response from security agencies.
At the District Court in Shimla, an email claimed that explosives, including IEDs and suicide RDX devices, had been planted in the building. The authorities responded immediately. The court was evacuated, and bomb disposal teams, sniffer dogs, and police carried out a full search. Thankfully, nothing dangerous was found.
A similar threat was sent to the District and Sessions Court in Rampur, also in Shimla district. That building was also cleared and searched, but no explosives were found there either.
The District and Sessions Court in Kullu also received a bomb threat via email earlier in the day, prompting an immediate evacuation. Staff, lawyers, and visitors were safely escorted out, while bomb squads, rapid response units, and dog squads carried out a detailed search. Senior police officials remained on site to oversee the operation.
This isn’t the first time Kullu has faced such a scare. A similar bomb threat targeted the Deputy Commissioner’s office on May 1 this year, which later turned out to be a hoax.
Teja Thakur, President of the Kullu Bar Association, confirmed the incident, stating, “The court premises were evacuated after an email warning about a bomb was received.”
Superintendent of Police Karthikeyan Gokulachandran added, “We have taken immediate steps to ensure public safety and are working closely with cybercrime and law enforcement units to investigate the source of the threat.”
In Nahan, Sirmaur district, the District Court Complex was also evacuated after a bomb threat email was received. Local police, administration officials, and a four-member bomb disposal team acted swiftly. Although no explosive material was found during the search, this was the first time such a threat had been received at the court."
“All necessary measures have been taken to ensure public safety. People are urged not to spread or believe in rumours,” said Nishchint Singh Negi, Superintendent of Police, Sirmaur.
This isn't the first time Himachal Pradesh has faced such threats. Over the past few months, similar hoax emails have targeted key state offices, including the Himachal Pradesh Secretariat, Chief Secretary’s office, High Court, and Deputy Commissioners’ offices in Mandi, Chamba, and Hamirpur.
The increasing frequency of such threats has become a major challenge for the administration and security agencies. They cause significant disruption, drain public resources, and raise anxiety levels among residents. Cybercrime units have been roped in to trace the origin of the emails and verify their authenticity.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up at government buildings, courts, transport hubs, and other public spaces across the state. The authorities remain on high alert to ensure public safety.
