The Calcutta High Court on Sunday granted an interim stay on the demolition of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) office in Amtala linked to party MP Abhishek Banerjee, directing that the structure be maintained in its current condition until further orders. The matter was mentioned for urgent hearing despite it being a court holiday. Banerjee’s counsel brought the issue before Justice Raja Basu Chowdhury soon after the court opened, following which arrangements were made for a special hearing in the judge’s chambers— an uncommon step in judicial proceedings.
Although the hearing was scheduled for 12 noon, it could not begin on time as no counsel representing the state was initially present. A state lawyer later joined virtually and sought additional time to review the case documents. The court observed that proceedings could not continue without hearing the state’s position.
Even as the hearing was underway, activity resumed at the Amtala site, where bulldozers were brought in and a heavy police presence was deployed. Fire brigade units were also kept on standby, and the area remained under tight security.
The controversy originates from allegations by the administration that the office building was constructed without an approved plan or valid documentation. Based on these claims, the premises had been cordoned off since Saturday morning with police and central forces deployed, and guardrails installed around the site.
Officials said demolition work began after police broke open the locks and entered the premises in the presence of administrative authorities. There were also reports of alleged vandalism by some locals. Supporters of the BJP were seen celebrating near the site, with slogans raised during the demolition.
According to administrative sources, two notices were issued within a week citing violations related to building plans. Banerjee was asked to appear before the district administration to explain the matter. The notices further stated that the land on which the office stands was purchased in the name of ‘Leaps and Bounds’, and documents allegedly include the name of his father, Amit Banerjee.
Authorities said action was initiated after no response was received to the notices. Following the demolition drive, Banerjee had announced that he would challenge the move legally and filed a plea for urgent hearing the next day.
With the High Court now intervening, further proceedings in the matter will depend on the court’s final ruling, which is expected to determine the legality of the administrative action.
