The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has questioned four nurses from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as part of its probe into the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor on August 9. The nurses were interrogated at the CBI’s CGO Complex office on Thursday.

Sources indicate that these nurses were on duty in the hospital’s emergency room when the incident took place. More nurses who were working that day have also been summoned, and their questioning is scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

The victim’s family has expressed frustration over the progress of the investigation, alleging that the CBI has not conducted a thorough probe. They had earlier approached the Calcutta High Court, requesting a deeper inquiry into the case.

The case has also been under consideration in the Supreme Court. Initially, the Calcutta High Court postponed hearings until the Supreme Court made a decision. However, the apex court recently declared the victim’s family’s petition as contentious and advised them to file a fresh application.

Since the case was already pending in the Calcutta High Court, the Supreme Court also asked the family if they wanted to continue the proceedings there. The family then requested that the case be returned to the Calcutta High Court.

On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that a single bench of the Calcutta High Court could now proceed with hearing the case based on the petition filed by the victim’s family.

The horrific crime led to major protests across the state. Junior doctors at RG Kar Hospital staged a hunger strike and temporarily stopped work, demanding justice for their colleague.

A lower court has already convicted civic volunteer Sanjay Roy in connection with the crime, sentencing him to life imprisonment. However, the victim’s family insists that other individuals were involved and remain unidentified. They continue to push for further investigation to ensure that all those responsible are held accountable.
