Self-enumeration under Census 2027 began in Delhi on Friday, with residents across Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) wards invited to submit household details online, as authorities rolled out a digital-first exercise ahead of door-to-door enumeration from May 16.
Among those who completed the process on the first day were Lt Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, signalling the formal launch of the exercise in the national capital.
After completing the process, Gupta said the system is simple and secure, urging residents to participate and emphasising the importance of accurate data for policymaking.
She said correct information ensures that policies effectively reach those in need.
Sandhu, in a post on X, said the exercise had officially commenced across all MCD wards and called on residents to support the census.
“Your participation plays an important role in shaping the future of our city and nation,” he said.
He added that the digital initiative enables citizens to directly submit household information, ensuring accurate enumeration and strengthening governance through reliable data.

The self-enumeration exercise has already been completed in New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Delhi Cantonment areas, where houselisting and housing operations through door-to-door visits are currently underway.
Officials said all residents in MCD wards, irrespective of domicile status, are eligible to participate in the voluntary exercise by logging on to the Census portal.
Only one login per household is required, with the head of the family or any other member able to complete the process using a mobile number.
Users must select a preferred language during the first login, which cannot be changed later.
The process also requires respondents to provide geo-coordinates of their residence, either by selecting the location on a satellite map, searching the address, or manually entering latitude and longitude.
Upon submission, an 11-digit self-enumeration ID is generated, which must be presented to enumerators during door-to-door visits scheduled from May 16 to June 14 under the houselisting and housing operations phase.
A toll-free helpline, 1855, has been made available for assistance related to the census exercise.
Self-enumeration will be conducted across 250 MCD wards between May 1 and May 15, with the portal accessible in 16 languages, including Hindi, English, Bengali, Tamil and Urdu.
