A two-member fact-finding team from the Ministry of Education reached North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Sunday to investigate allegations of irregularities levelled against Vice-Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla.
The delegation comprises Prof DP Singh, a former Chairman of the University Grants Commission, and Prof Dilip Chandra Nath, a former Vice-Chancellor of Assam University.
Their agenda includes interactions with key stakeholders, including student bodies such as NEHUSU and KSU’s NEHU Unit, on November 25.
During their visit, the team will conduct spot inspections of the university’s infrastructure and engage with faculty, administrative staff, and other stakeholders.
The inquiry is centred on allegations ranging from contentious appointments to infrastructural negligence, the institution’s declining rankings, and concerns about the Vice-Chancellor's alleged lack of responsiveness.
The probe was mandated through an order issued by the Ministry on November 15, giving the committee 15 days to compile and submit its findings.
With only two days left to meet the deadline, the panel’s observations are eagerly awaited.
The Meghalaya High Court, which is monitoring the developments, has scheduled a hearing on December 6.
The division bench, led by Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice B Bhattacharjee, will review the committee’s report before deciding on potential corrective measures.
The investigation comes amid mounting concerns over the university's governance, with students, faculty, and other stakeholders hoping for resolution through the Ministry’s intervention
