Manipur CM N Biren Singh launches Permanent Housing Scheme for violence-affected displaced persons at a ceremony held at the CM’s Secretariat in 2023.

The Centre has approved the construction of 7,000 houses for internally displaced people affected by violence in Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh announced on Wednesday.

During a press briefing at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Singh expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other leaders for their efforts in addressing the situation in the violence-hit state.

“I thank the PM, HM, and other leaders as they are seriously concerned about the situation in the state. Recently, the Centre sanctioned the construction of about 7,000 houses in the state for internally displaced persons. This will enable them to relocate from the schools and colleges where they are currently sheltered. Proposals for another 2,000 houses are in process,” Singh said.

Housing allocation detailed

The Chief Minister outlined the distribution of the newly approved housing units across various districts. “A total of 1,015 houses will be built in Bishnupur, 1,331 in Churachandpur, 1,217 in Kakching, 511 in Chandel, 1,813 in Kangpokpi, 225 in Imphal West, and 594 in Imphal East,” he added.

Singh also announced significant financial support for infrastructure, revealing that the Ministry of Road Transport, led by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, has allocated Rs 1,000 crore for highway construction in the state. An additional Rs 175 crore has been earmarked for constructing concrete roads in the hill district headquarters.

The Chief Minister said that communication issues surrounding 28 national highway projects have been resolved between the Ministry of Road Transport and the state government.

Further developments

Additionally, Singh highlighted plans for a Rs 220-crore world-class football stadium, following discussions with Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. He further confirmed talks with the Home Ministry and state authorities to ensure the safe transport of construction materials to hill districts.

Ahead of Diwali and Ningol Chakouba, Singh announced that each displaced individual would receive Rs 1,000. The Chief Minister also assured that salaries, allowances, and pensions would be disbursed by the end of October.

On the recent violence in Jiribam, where properties were set ablaze, Singh said, “There are always some people who are against restoring peace in the state. I sent one colleague to Jiribam to meet civil leaders of all communities and settle the issues.”
