The Chandigarh Police have suspended Senior Constable Ajay Kundu following the circulation of a viral video featuring his wife, Jyoti, dancing on a zebra crossing at Sector-20 Gurdwara Chowk.
The incident, which took place on March 20 at approximately 4:30 pm, led to traffic obstruction and public outcry. Jyoti, who had visited a temple in Sector 32 before filming the video, was assisted by her sister-in-law, Pooja, in recording the reel. The video captures Jyoti performing to a popular Haryanvi song, seemingly unaware of the traffic congestion she was causing.
In response to the viral video, Head Constable Jasbir lodged a complaint at the Sector 34 police station in Chandigarh. This prompted the Chandigarh Police to initiate an investigation led by ASI Baljit Singh.
The team reviewed CCTV footage from cameras installed at Sector 20’s Gurdwara Chowk and the Sector 17 police station, which confirmed the obstruction. Following the inquiry, an FIR was registered against Jyoti and Pooja under Sections 125, 292, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for causing traffic disruption and posing a risk to public safety.
Constable Ajay Kundu, who was stationed at the Sector 19 police station, was suspended after authorities discovered that the video had been uploaded from his Instagram account. However, Jyoti and Pooja were granted bail shortly after their arrest.
The suspension of Constable Kundu has sparked debate, with many questioning the fairness of the decision. Some argued that he should not be penalized for his wife's actions, as she was the one responsible for the traffic obstruction. This has led to discussions about whether the disciplinary action taken against him was justified or excessive.
Social media reactions to the incident were divided, with some defending Jyoti while others criticized the growing trend of making social media reels in public spaces.
One user commented, "Suspending him is the wrong decision. She was just entertaining people." Another wrote, "What is this obsession with making reels? People need to focus on more productive activities." The incident has once again raised concerns about public safety and the impact of social media trends on law enforcement decisions.
