As Lutyens’ Delhi has been placed on high alert in the wake of the Cockroach Janta Party protest and the Youth Congress demonstration in the national capital, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on Wednesday shut 16 Metro stations across central Delhi. The step it said was taken due to security concerns.
The Metro stations that remained closed during the day include Lok Kalyan Marg,Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Barakhambha Road, Supreme Court,Seva Teerth , Janpath,Mandi House, Central Secretariat, ITO,Delhi Gate, Indraprastha,Khan Market, Jor Bagh and Shivaji Stadium.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) today around 11:30 am announced that 16 stations across several lines including blue, yellow, and violet have been shut owing to "security reasons." Later, DMRC said in a post on X that all stations of the Delhi Metro network are now open for passenger services.
This led to confusion and chaos at many stations where commuters were seen in dilemma as to wait or to take an alternative route for whole day, At several stations commuters were asked to wait by the officials, only to find that exit gates were closed forcing them to make retreat after wasting considerable time. It is because the DMRC did not give a timeline for when the gates would be open. The interchange facility shall remain available at Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House and Central Secretariat, it added.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police have deployed personnel across multiple locations to manage the protests, agencies reported.According to sources, a multi-layered security arrangement has been put in place around Connaught Place, Jantar Mantar, Rafi Marg, Parliament Street and other sensitive areas to maintain law and order.
Additional police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed at key intersections and other vulnerable points, while anti-riot units, quick reaction teams and reserve forces remain on standby.Security has also been tightened around Parliament, key government buildings and other vital installations in the Lutyens’ Delhi area. Police teams are conducting intensive vehicle checks and frisking at strategic locations, while security at Metro stations and other public places has been enhanced.
Officials said adequate arrangements have been made to deal with any situation arising out of the protests and appealed to organisers and participants to maintain peace and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
