The Jammu and Kashmir Police’s North Zone has issued a stern warning to medical shops and chemists against prescription violations, saying that such offences will be treated as crime under the strict NDPS Act.
Sopore Police further warned that anyone found selling medicines without a valid prescription will face strict action and will be treated on a par with drug peddlers.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Sopore, Iftikhar Talib told reporters that no medicine should be sold without a doctor’s prescription. He also directed chemists to install surveillance cameras at their establishments and premises to monitor all transactions.
Speaking at a mega awareness rally in Chijhama, the senior officer said, “If any shopkeeper is found violating these norms in medical shops, we will treat him as a drug peddler.” He added that the move aims to curb the misuse of scheduled drugs and tighten the noose around illegal pharmacies operating in the town.
Earlier on Thursday, Baramulla Police introduced a tip-line service for people having information about drug peddlers in the district.
According to senior officials, the helpline will remain under the direct supervision of an SSP-rank officer, who will direct action against drug syndicates in Kashmir.
Officials said the main objective of the exercise is to protect the identity of informants while ensuring strict action against those involved in the drug trade.
