A three-year-old boy from Korba district has been diagnosed with human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur city, marking the state’s first reported case, health officials confirmed on Friday.
The child was admitted to a private hospital in Bilaspur on January 27 with symptoms of cold and cough, said Dr. Pramod Tiwari, Chief Medical and Health Officer of Bilaspur. Suspecting HMPV, doctors sent his swab samples to AIIMS Raipur for testing.
After the test confirmed the infection, the child was moved to the ICU and kept in isolation. However, his condition has not improved, and doctors are considering shifting him to AIIMS Raipur for better treatment.
Meanwhile, his three siblings are under observation, though they have not shown any symptoms.
Following this case, health officials have issued an alert in Bilaspur and started a survey in the child's locality in Korba to monitor the situation.
