In a major breakthrough, Uttarakhand Police have busted an interstate child-lifting gang and rescued a three-year-old girl. Six people, including two women, have been arrested in connection with the case.
At the same time, Dehradun Police arrested two wanted criminals after a late-night encounter in the Rishikesh area. The arrests came after an exchange of fire with police, making it an important week for law enforcement in the state.
The child abduction case began when a three-year-old girl was kidnapped from the Bairagi Camp area in Kankhal, Haridwar, on Saturday. Haridwar SSP Navneet Singh Bhullar said police reviewed CCTV footage and identified a man and a woman suspected to be involved in the crime.
During the investigation, police found links between this case and a similar child abduction reported in Delhi on May 4. Acting quickly, teams recovered two children in Delhi and arrested six members of the gang.
Police said the gang targeted children and sold them to childless couples. Investigators revealed that the group had earlier sold a child kidnapped from Delhi to buyers in Badaun for Rs 1.5 lakh. They were allegedly trying to sell the girl abducted from Haridwar when police caught them.
In another operation, Dehradun Police arrested two suspects after an encounter in the Rishikesh area on Monday. SSP Promendra Dobhal said police tried to stop two men riding a motorcycle with their faces covered.
Instead of stopping, the suspects crashed through a police barricade and sped toward Shyampur. During the chase, they opened fire at the police team. Officers returned fire in self-defence, and both suspects suffered bullet injuries to their legs.
The two men were wanted in connection with a recent firing incident in Rishikesh in which two people were injured. Police recovered two country-made pistols and live ammunition from them. Both suspects were taken to a government hospital for treatment and remain in police custody.
