Chinese troops have reportedly advanced 60 kilometres into Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district, establishing a camp in the Kapapu area.

The incursion has intensified concerns in the region, particularly given the unresolved case of two local men believed to be in the custody of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

Sources indicate that the PLA's encroachment occurred approximately a week ago.

The situation is further complicated by the ongoing issue of the missing individuals, who vanished nearly two years ago.

Their families have claimed that the men are detained by the Chinese military.

Dishanso Chikro, the brother of one of the missing men, said, “I have been told that they were apprehended by the Chinese army. The Indian Army has raised the issue with their Chinese counterparts, but there has been no response.”

Anjaw MLA and Minister for Women and Child Development, Dasanglu Pul, confirmed the disappearance of the men but refrained from commenting on the recent incursion. Pul asserted that the men are alive, though no further details were provided on the record.

The incursion was initially reported by local porters employed by the Indian Army.

The closest ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) camp to the incursion site is situated at Hadigra Pass on the McMahon Line, while the nearest administrative circle, Chaglagam, is about 90 kilometres away.

Incursions in this area are not unprecedented. In August 2022, PLA soldiers were observed near Hadigra Lake, supervising infrastructure development.

Previous incidents include a 2020 transgression in the Dibang Valley district and a 2019 event where the PLA constructed a wooden bridge over Doimru Nalah, approximately 40 kilometres inside Indian territory at Amako camp.

Arunachal Pradesh shares a 1,126-kilometre border with China along the total 3,488 km Sino-India border. The latest incursion has left local villagers apprehensive about the potential loss of their land.
