A helicopter operated by AIIMS, Rishikesh, made an emergency landing near the Kedarnath helipad on Saturday after developing a technical glitch, officials confirmed. All three occupants — two doctors and the pilots — are safe.
The ‘Sanjeevani’ heli ambulance had flown to Kedarnath to evacuate a pilgrim, identified as Shree Devi, who was suffering from respiratory distress.
According to District Tourism Development Officer and nodal officer for the Heli Service Rahul Chaubey, the helicopter encountered a technical snag in its tail rotor during the operation.
The pilot, upon detecting the fault before reaching the main helipad, made an emergency landing on a nearby flat surface. During the landing, the tail rotor broke, but a major accident was averted.
The authorities have confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries in the incident. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will conduct a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the malfunction.
The incident caused brief panic in the area, which is currently experiencing a high influx of pilgrims as the Char Dham Yatra season continues.
