A central forces jawan was arrested on charges of attempting to rape a minor on Sunday night, triggering widespread outrage among local residents in Asansol, West Burdwan. The incident, which allegedly took place near a CISF camp in the Shitalpur area, led to protests, a road blockade, and a heavy police deployment before the situation was eventually brought under control.
According to police sources, the accused has been identified as Ramakant Vishwakarma, who was posted on security duty at a nearby coal mine. Officials clarified that he had no connection with election-related duties. According the complaints by the victim’s family, Vishwakarma lured the girl to the CISF camp under the pretext of offering her mangoes and then attempted to sexually assault her.
The incident reportedly occurred when the minor had gone to a garden adjacent to the camp to collect fallen mangoes. It is alleged that Vishwakarma called her over, promising to give her more fruit. Unaware of any danger, the girl followed him. However, once inside a room within the camp premises, he allegedly attempted to force himself on her. The girl raised an alarm, prompting the accused to flee the scene on a scooter.
The minor later returned home in distress and narrated the incident to her family. News of the alleged assault spread rapidly across the locality, sparking anger among residents. A large number of people gathered outside the CISF camp, demanding immediate action against the accused. As tensions escalated, locals blocked the road near Gate No. 3 of the camp, bringing traffic to a standstill.
Police personnel, led by Binay Das, in-charge of the Saktoria Outpost, reached the spot and attempted to pacify the crowd. Despite repeated appeals, protesters initially refused to lift the blockade, insisting that the accused be arrested without delay. A search operation was launched soon after.
At around 10:30 pm, police arrested Vishwakarma. Following his arrest, the blockade was withdrawn, and the situation gradually returned to normal. Police officials stated that the investigation was initiated after receiving a written complaint from the victim’s family.
