A clash erupted between Students’ Federation of India (SFI) members and the police during a protest at Summerhill Chowk near the entrance of Himachal Pradesh University on Monday.
The protest was held in opposition to the state government’s recent decision to increase bus fare. Tensions rose when demonstrators attempted to burn an effigy of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, prompting the police to step in.
SFI members raised slogans criticising the increase in fare, demanding an immediate rollback of the state government’s decision.
Terming the hike “anti-people and anti-student,” SFI state committee member Ankush Rana said the move would place an undue financial burden on daily commuters who rely on public transport to reach their destination on a regular basis.
The student body also issued a warning to the government, threatening to launch a mass agitation if the fare hike is not withdrawn.
