A case of gang-rape with a Class VIII student has rocked the Kamakhyaguri police station area of Cooch Behar district. Police have arrested two accused, the girl’s boyfriend and his friend, after a complaint was lodged by the victim’s family.
According to police sources, the girl had come into contact with a youth on social media, who concealed the fact that he was married. Their friendship soon turned into a relationship and on Saturday, the girl reportedly left her home to meet him but did not return.
Family members alleged that the youth, along with his friend, took the minor to a relative’s vacant house, where she was subjected to torture throughout the night. News of the incident spread on Sunday morning, triggering shock and tension in the locality.
Following a written complaint filed at the Kamakhyaguri police station on Sunday evening, officers launched an investigation and arrested the two accused. They were produced before the Alipurduar court on Monday. Public prosecutor Piyush Dutt said the accused were remanded to police custody for four days.
The victim was taken for medical examination and later presented before the Child Welfare Committee. After counseling, she was sent to the state-run Cooch Behar Home.
The girl’s parents, weeping in the court premises, demanded strict punishment for the accused. The case has provoked strong reactions in the district, with many on social media demanding tighter vigilance and better safety measures for minors.
