A cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts triggered flash floods.

A devastating cloudburst has struck the Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand, leading to several families being trapped under debris and numerous people sustaining injuries. The incident has had a particularly severe impact in certain areas.

In the Mopata area of Dewal, a couple identified as Tara Singh and his wife have gone missing, while another couple, Vikram Singh and his wife, were injured. The cloudburst also caused their cowshed to collapse, burying an estimated 15 to 20 animals.

The effects of the cloudburst are widespread. In the Rudraprayag district, the water levels of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, where they converge, are rising continuously. The situation has also become critical in Chenagad.

In Kedarnath valley’s Lawara village, a bridge on the motor road was washed away by the powerful currents. The surging river water has entered residential areas, prompting the administration to evacuate affected homes. The Hanuman temple in Rudraprayag has been completely submerged.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his sorrow over the incident in a post on X, stating, “In Rudraprayag district’s Basukedar tehsil under Badeth Dungar Tok and Chamoli district’s Dewal area, due to a cloudburst and debris flow, sad news has been received of some families being trapped.”

He assured that immediate action was being taken to manage the situation, adding, “Relief and rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing by the local administration. I am in constant touch with the officials regarding this matter and have spoken to the Disaster Secretary and the District Magistrate, giving necessary instructions for the effective operation of rescue efforts.”

Reports confirmed that four houses in Basukedar were washed away due to the heavy rainfall. However, he provided reassurance that all residents had been safely evacuated and no one was missing. He emphasised that the administration is "closely monitoring the situation". In light of the heavy rainfall, schools in Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Haridwar, and Pithoragarh districts have been ordered to remain closed for the day.
