Due to public anger over the murder of a Tripura student in Dehradun, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday spoke to the victim’s father over the phone and assured him of strict punishment for those responsible, officials said.

During the conversation, Dhami expressed deep grief over the killing of Angel Chakma and told his father, Tarun Prasad Chakma, that he was personally saddened by the incident and understood the immense pain faced by the family.

Dhami said students from across India and abroad come to Uttarakhand to pursue education, and such incidents have never been part of the state’s culture. “This incident is painful for all of us,” Dhami said, adding that the state government would take strict action in the matter.

He informed Tarun Prasad Chakma that five accused have already been arrested in connection with the case, while another accused is suspected to have fled to Nepal. Efforts are underway to arrest him by announcing a reward.

Dhami also said he has spoken to Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh regarding the incident.

The Chief Minister reiterated that the Uttarakhand government stands firmly with the victim’s family. Assuring all possible assistance, Dhami said he would remain in touch with Dr Manik Saha to ensure support for the bereaved family.

Angel Chakma, a 24-year-old final-year MBA student at a private university in Dehradun, was seriously injured after being allegedly attacked with a knife and a bracelet on December 9. He succumbed to his injuries on December 26 after undergoing treatment for 17 days.
