Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed solidarity with the flood-affected northeastern states and pledged all possible support. In telephonic conversations with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh, Dhami discussed about the situation in their respective states due to incessant rains, landslides, and flash floods, which have resulted in significant loss of life and property.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, Dhami assured Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Tripura CM Manik Saha, and Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu that the people of Uttarakhand stand with them in this difficult time and the state government is ready to extend all possible help if required.
Several northeastern states—including Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura—are currently battling worsening flood conditions due to continuous rainfall, leading to swollen rivers and submerged low-lying areas.
Meanwhile, in a major announcement on Monday, CM Dhami declared to increase the ex-gratia amount granted to the families of soldiers from Uttarakhand who are killed in action. The compensation has been raised from ₹10 lakh to ₹50 lakh.
The Uttarakhand government issued an official order confirming the implementation of this decision from July 26, 2024. The Sainik Welfare Department clarified that the revised amount will be applicable to dependents of martyrs who make the supreme sacrifice on or after this date.
Describing Uttarakhand as both Devbhoomi and Veerbhoomi, Dhami said, “Our brave soldiers have always displayed unmatched courage and commitment in defending the nation’s borders.”
He added that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government has taken several key steps in support of the soldiers, including the implementation of One Rank-One Pension, the construction of the National War Memorial, and enhanced defence infrastructure in the border areas.
The Chief Minister further noted that the state remains committed to the welfare of soldiers and their families. In addition to the increased ex-gratia, the financial assistance and annuity for gallantry awardees—from Param Vir Chakra to Mention-in-Dispatches—has also been increased. The government has also decided to provide one government job to a family member of each martyr in the state.
