CM Mamata hikes doctors' salaries after RG Kar incident

It has been a little over six months and CM Banerjee held a meeting with the senior and junior doctors to address the issues in the medical fraternity of the state.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has announced a salary hike for state government doctors. This comes after the entire medical fraternity of the state came together to seek justice for Kolkata's RG Kar rape and murder victim.

 

It has been a little over six months and CM Banerjee held a meeting with the senior and junior doctors to address the issues in the medical fraternity of the state.

 

On Monday, while making the announcement of a salary hike for doctors at a medical conclave in Kolkata, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that senior doctors will see a pay raise of ₹15,000, while the hike for junior doctors, interns, house staff and post-graduate trainees will be ₹10,000 each.

 

The Trinamool Congress supremo also announced ₹2 crore worth of funds for cultural activities for medical colleges in the state.

 

During the event, Mamata Banerjee condoled the death of the RG Kar case victim, saying, "I sympathise with the family of my sister who lost her life. We want proper punishment for the culprits."

"Even TMC government has brought the Aparajita bill to help curb incidents of rape," she added.

 

CM Banerjee also spoke about the death of a pregnant woman after she was allegedly administered with expired saline at Midnapore Medical College and Hospital on January 10. 

 

Referring to the Midnapore incident, "The incident took place due to medical negligence. Police are investigating, and I have decided to revoke the suspension of all the junior doctors who were suspended," the Chief Minister added.

 

The RG Kar rape-murder incident, where body of a woman postgraduate trainee was found in a seminar hall at the hospital in the early hours on August 9, 2024, who was raped and then murdered. A civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, was arrested in connection with the case.

 

The incident led to nationwide protests and outrage by thousands of people.
