Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath laid the foundation stone for the new office building of the Uttar Pradesh State Election Commission in the Awadh Vihar Yojana on Friday, according to a press release.

At the ceremony, the Chief Minister stated that the building would strengthen the transparent and systematic election process, thereby further empowering democracy. The ₹50-crore, six-floor building will span 2,618.59 sq meters. For safety and convenience, it will feature a 25,000-litre RCC tank on the roof and a 100,000-litre underground tank in the basement.

The Chief Minister said that the new building for the State Election Commission is a "historic step toward strengthening democracy." He added that the commission will now be able to conduct the massive process of Panchayat and local body elections in the state more effectively. The Chief Minister pointed out that more than 12 crore voters participate in the three-tier Panchayat system elections alone, which is a greater number than the total population of many other states.

Highlighting the strength of democracy, Yogi Adityanath said, “The people are not just voters but Janardan of the democratic system. Listening to their voice and giving importance to their issues is the duty of public representatives. If any public representative fails to meet the expectations of the people, they will be rejected after five years. This is the greatest strength of democracy, and it is this system that has made India stand as a strong nation.”

The Chief Minister also stated that achieving the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) by 2047 depends on a ‘Viksit Uttar Pradesh’ (Developed Uttar Pradesh). He emphasised that robust democratic institutions and an efficient election system are the key enablers of this goal. He said that until now, the State Election Commission had been working from a rented building, which had created several difficulties, but with the construction of the new building, the Commission’s work is expected to gain momentum.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the Rajkiya Nirman Nigam would complete the construction of the modern six-storey building within 18 months. Once finished, Uttar Pradesh will be among the states that have their own building for the Election Commission.

Emphasising the building features, Chief Minister stated the premises would have a road pathway, open parking and a rainwater harvesting system. A 25 KLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) will be provided, and the whole building will be protected with a CCTV system. Two 13-passenger lifts and one 8-passenger lift will be provided for the employees and visitors' convenience. The office building is set to not only make the Election Commission work more efficiently but also act as a model office with all the latest technology and facilities.

Among the dignitaries present at the event were Cabinet Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar, State Election Commissioner Rajan Pratap Singh, the Chairperson of the UP Women’s Commission, and the Chairperson of the SC-ST Commission.
