Former Punjab DGP Mustafa refutes involvement in son’s death

"We are public figures, so we tried to hide these matters, but now the truth must come out," he said.

Ex-Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa denies allegations levelled against him and his family in son Aqil’s death case.

‘Completely false’, says the former Punjab DGP Mohammad Mustafa, who, along with his wife (ex-Punjab Minister Razia Sultana), is facing allegations of involvement in what is being termed as "unnatural death" of their son. Interacting with the media, Mustafa said he welcomed the formation of a Special Investigative Team (SIT) whose investigation, he said, would reveal the truth. He said he will fully cooperate with the SIT.

Mustafa is a retired 1985-batch IPS officer. The Haryana police have booked him and his wife in connection with the death of their 35-year-old son, Aqil Akhter. The deceased’s wife and sister have also been booked. Aqil was found dead at his residence in Haryana's Panchkula on October 16.

Recently, a purported video of Aqil has been making rounds on the internet, where, before his death, he made some serious allegations against his father and other family members.

What does the family say?
As per the initial claims of Aqil’s family, he had a problem with substance abuse and died due to a drug overdose. Aqil’s body was buried by his family in their ancestral village, Harda Kheri.

Speaking about the video of Aqil, Mustafa told the media that it was posted on social media on August 27 and was deleted two hours later. Some people had downloaded it and were now "misusing it to malign the family", the ex-Punjab DGP claimed.

He then also informed the media that his son had been suffering from a psychotic disorder for nearly 18 years.

"He often became violent due to his illness," Mustafa said, adding, ‘We endured his mental suffering for years.’

"His condition had worsened to the point where he didn't understand what he was saying or doing," he added.

As per Mustafa’s statement, his son even once broke his mother’s hip in 2008, and they had to cover it up by saying that the ex-Punjab DGP’s wife had fallen. Citing another incident, Mustafa then claimed that his son also tried to attack his wife.

"We are public figures, so we tried to hide these matters, but now the truth must come out," he said.

Mustafa said his son's post-mortem was conducted at his request, but the report has not yet been released.

What's in the video?
In the purported video, Aqil, while referring to the matters pertaining to the family, said that he was under a lot of stress.

"I feel they will frame me in a false case... Their plan is to have me falsely imprisoned or even killed, but they are unable to have their way," he said in the video.

He also alleged that his family members often told him that he was delusional and was hallucinating, adding, “They are trying to establish a false narrative.”

Mustafa rejects the claims of the complainant -
The former Punjab DGP refuted the accusations placed by Shamshuddin — the complainant — on whose complaint the FIR has been registered. Mustafa termed the allegations as "completely false".  Shamshuddin is a resident of Punjab's Malerkotla.

The case has now turned into a high-voltage family drama.
