In a significant political development ahead of the high-stakes Assam Assembly Elections, the Congress has suffered a setback in western Assam, with senior Dhubri leader Abul Mia resigning from the party and joining the Raijor Dal.

The defection, attributed to growing internal discontent following the recent delimitation exercise, highlights emerging cracks within the Congress’s state unit. Mia’s exit is being seen as a major blow in Dhubri district, particularly as the newly expanded Gauripur constituency gains prominence as a key electoral battleground.

Mia previously held the posts of General Secretary of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and Vice President of the Dhubri District Congress. His resignation reportedly stems from dissatisfaction over candidate selection in Gauripur, where the Congress has fielded sitting Abdus Sobhan Ali Sarkar, the MLA from Golakganj.

Sources indicate that Mia’s decision was driven by perceived neglect and disagreements over ticket distribution, tensions that have intensified following the redrawing of constituency boundaries. His shift to Raijor Dal is expected to significantly alter local political dynamics, given his strong grassroots presence in the region.

Political observers believe the development could fragment the Congress’s traditional vote base in Gauripur, potentially giving an edge to rival parties. The constituency, now considerably larger in both geographical area and electorate, includes as many as 33 panchayats, making electoral management more challenging.

Mia’s induction is likely to bolster Raijor Dal’s position in lower Assam, setting the stage for a triangular or multi-cornered contest. The evolving political landscape presents a fresh challenge not only for Congress but also for other major players aiming to retain their influence in the district.
