In an unusual form of punishment aimed at promoting road safety awareness, a court in Dakshina Kannada has directed a habitual traffic offender to stand at busy junctions with road safety placards for 15 days.
The accused, Rakshit G, a resident of Sullia, had repeatedly violated traffic regulations in the town. Following multiple offences, three separate cases were registered against him at the Sullia Police Station under Sections 119 read with 177, 184, and 194(C) of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
According to officials, the chargesheet in the cases was filed by Sullia police sub-inspector Santosh BP before the SCJ and JMFC Court.
During the hearing, the court imposed a fine of ₹3,000 on the accused in two of the cases and also ordered him to perform community service for 15 days. The service period has been divided into five days each for all three cases, to be carried out between March 15 and March 29. The court also directed the suspension of Rakshit’s driving license for three months.
As part of the order, the youth has been instructed to stand at important junctions across Sullia city while holding placards displaying information about traffic rules and road safety. He will also engage with the public to raise awareness about the importance of following traffic regulations.
The unusual punishment, intended as an educational measure, has drawn significant attention in the district, with many viewing it as a creative step toward encouraging responsible driving behaviour.
