Security personnel stand guard on a road amid curfew, days after violence during protests for Ladakh Statehood, in Leh on Tuesday.

UT authorities in Ladakh on Tuesday announced relaxations in curfew for four hours from 10 am on Tuesday and directed shopkeepers to open their establishments, officials said.

The restrictions were relaxed for two hours on Monday, after the last rites of two people killed in the protests were performed.

The police official said a decision to further extend the relaxation in curfew-bound areas will be made after assessing the situation later in the day.

Additional District Magistrate in Leh, Ghulam Mohammed, ordered the opening of all groceries, essential services, hardware, and vegetable shops during the relaxation period.

“Apart from the violence reported last Wednesday, there was no untoward incident in the UT. With police and paramilitary forces deployed in strength, the situation on the ground has remained peaceful,” an official said.

On Monday, while chairing the meeting, LG Kavinder Gupta appealed to the people to maintain peace, calling it “the cornerstone of development.”

Gupta said, “I request all sections of society to maintain unity and harmony and not fall prey to the designs of anti-social and anti-national elements. The administration stands firmly with the people and will ensure their safety, dignity, and progress.”

The officials further added that internet services in the region remained suspended in Leh town, and prohibitory orders banning assemblies of five or more persons was still in force in other major parts of the UT, including Kargil.

The violent clashes killed four people and hurt 90 protesters and 40 police personnel. In response, police have detained around 60 people allegedly for inciting violence.

Protesters set the BJP office in Leh on fire and torched several vehicles, as an angry mob vandalised public property in frustration over the Centre’s delay in holding talks with representative bodies demanding statehood and inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule.
