A Dalit youth was allegedly thrashed with shoes and subjected to casteist abuse by a group of men for using his mobile phone while standing at a shop in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur district on Friday night, police said.

The incident took place in Maharajganj village under the Civil Lines police station area when the youth, identified as Virendra Ahirwar, had gone to a local shop to buy household items. According to Virendra, three accused — Bharat Lal Patel, G Lal Patel, and another local strongman — allegedly began verbally abusing him while he was standing at the shop and using his mobile phone. The altercation soon escalated, and the men allegedly thrashed him with shoes and physically assaulted him. When Virendra’s family members rushed to his aid, they were also allegedly attacked by the accused and subjected to casteist slurs. Following information about the incident, a team from the Civil Lines police station reached the spot and shifted the injured to the district hospital.

Those injured include Virendra, his father Bhagirath, his mother Habbu Bai, and his sister Naina. They are currently undergoing treatment. Virendra alleged that appropriate legal sections had not been invoked against the accused, expressing dissatisfaction with the police action.

Meanwhile, Civil Lines police station in-charge Satish Singh said that an FIR has been registered in connection with the incident and efforts are underway to apprehend the accused. “An FIR has been registered against the accused and the injured have been hospitalised. Searches are being conducted to nab the accused,” Singh said.
