Two men have been arrested in Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur district following the alleged gang-rape of a cognitively impaired and deaf-mute woman. The crime was captured on CCTV, which helped police identify the suspects.
Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar said that the two men, Ankur Verma and Harshit Pandey, were arrested after a police encounter and have confessed to the crime during preliminary questioning. A disturbing 16-second CCTV video showed the woman, who was barefoot, running down a dimly lit, deserted road with men on motorcycles chasing her.
The incident came to light after the 21-year-old woman’s brother lodged a complaint with the Kotwali Dehat police station two days ago alleging that his deaf-mute and cognitively impaired sister was raped.
Kumar said that police inspected the route the woman had taken and that CCTV footage was crucial in identifying the two suspects.

According to the complaint, the woman was on her way home from her maternal uncle's house when she was forcibly taken on a motorcycle by the men and raped at a nearby secluded location.
Additional SP Vishal Pandey confirmed that the assault site was promptly inspected, and the victim was sent for a medical examination. The police have collected evidence and are continuing to analyse CCTV footage to expedite the investigation. The victim is currently receiving medical care, and further legal proceedings are underway.
