A heartbreaking incident has came to light in North 24 Parganas on Sunday, where a young man, struggling to support his family, was forced to sell his wife's kidney under intense pressure from a moneylender.

As the news appeared, Ashoknagar police arrested the accused, Vikas Ghosh, who has been remanded to five days of police custody by the Barasat court.

According to police the young man, burdened with debt, had borrowed ₹60,000 from Bikash Ghosh at an exorbitant interest rate. Despite repaying ₹1,20,000 over several months, he was unable to clear the principal amount. Bikash allegedly exerted relentless pressure on him to settle the debt, even suggesting the unimaginable — selling a kidney to raise the money.

“With no other options in sight, the debt-ridden man and his wife made the heartbreaking decision to sell her kidney. According to reports, Bikash facilitated their contact with a woman who arranged for the organ to be sold at a reputed private hospital in Kolkata for ₹5 lakh,” said a police officer.

Even after the kidney was sold, the nightmare did not end. The young man alleged that Bikash continued to extort him, now demanding ₹2 lakh instead of the principal sum ₹60,000. When threats and intimidation became unbearable, he finally gathered the courage to seek justice, filing a written complaint at Ashoknagar police station.

In response, the police arrested Bikash, also known as Sheetal, from Haripur Bhairabtala in the Ashoknagar area. A police official, who chose to remain anonymous, confirmed that the case is being investigated as a potential kidney trafficking operation. Authorities are now working to identify others who may be involved in this exploitative racket.

Police officials are interrogating the accused to uncover the full extent of the operation. The incident sheds light on the extreme vulnerabilities of financially distressed individuals who often fall prey to unscrupulous lenders and illegal organ trade networks.

Police said the ongoing investigation is trying to bring justice to the victims and dismantle any criminal network operating behind this inhumane act.
