Among the prominent names are Atishi, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, and Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal surprised political circles on Sunday by announcing his decision to step down from the post in two days. His resignation comes amid controversies surrounding the Delhi liquor policy case. Kejriwal stated that he would return as Chief Minister only after receiving a "certificate of honesty" from the people, raising speculation about his successor.

Addressing Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers, Kejriwal also ruled out his long-time colleague, former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, as his replacement.

Sisodia is currently embroiled in the same liquor policy case, and Kejriwal said that both he and Sisodia would reclaim their positions only when "people say we are honest."

As Kejriwal prepares to vacate his position, the focus shifts to potential candidates within the AAP who might take over the reins of the Delhi government.

Among the prominent names are Atishi, Gopal Rai, Kailash Gahlot, and Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal.

Atishi: The front-runner

Atishi Marlena, a key player in the AAP and a dynamic figure in Delhi politics, is widely considered the leading candidate to succeed Kejriwal. Known for her involvement in policy reforms, especially in education, she has played an essential role since Kejriwal’s arrest by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with the liquor policy case.

As the most visible leader in Kejriwal’s absence, Atishi holds 14 ministerial portfolios, including Education, Finance, Public Works Department, Water, and Power.

Her ability to handle these crucial departments during a turbulent period has cemented her reputation within the party.

Her background in academia and her strong oratory skills have also gained her significant support. She has been instrumental in shaping Delhi’s education reforms, making her a popular figure among the electorate.

Atishi’s experience, combined with her deep understanding of governance, positions her as a strong contender for the Chief Minister's post.

Gopal Rai: The grassroots leader

Another name that has been floated is Gopal Rai, a 49-year-old seasoned politician with a background in student activism.

As a Cabinet Minister handling the Environment, Forest and Wildlife, Development, and General Administration portfolios, Rai has long been a key figure in Delhi’s political landscape.

Rai’s connection with the working-class communities of Delhi, his focus on environmental issues, and his experience in managing critical departments have made him a trusted leader within AAP.

He was once shot during a campaign and partially paralysed, a testimony to his resilience and dedication to public service.

His grassroots work, especially in labour rights, resonates with a broad spectrum of voters, and his hands-on experience with pressing issues like pollution control makes him a viable candidate for the top job.

Kailash Gahlot: The administrative expert

Kailash Gahlot, a senior figure in the Delhi government, is another potential candidate. Currently serving as the Transport Minister, Gahlot has led significant strides in the city’s transport infrastructure, including the expansion of bus services, the introduction of electric buses, and improved road safety.

At 50, Gahlot’s experience in managing large-scale projects and navigating bureaucratic hurdles has earned him respect within the party. His administrative capabilities and problem-solving skills make him a competent candidate for the Chief Minister’s post.

Being one of AAP’s senior leaders, Gahlot’s leadership could bring continuity to the party’s governance in Delhi.

Sunita Kejriwal: The outsider contender

A less conventional choice is Sunita Kejriwal, wife of Arvind Kejriwal and a former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer.

While she has not been involved in active politics, Sunita Kejriwal was a prominent figure in AAP’s Lok Sabha campaigns in Delhi, Haryana, and Gujarat.

A bureaucrat with over two decades of experience in the Income Tax Department, Sunita has been vocal in defending her husband and frequently appeared at press conferences to address the party’s supporters.

Her participation in the Opposition INDIA bloc’s rallies in Delhi and Ranchi has also raised her profile within the party.

However, there are hurdles to her potential elevation.

Sunita Kejriwal is not currently a member of AAP, and constitutional requirements would necessitate her contesting and winning a seat within three months if she were to take the Chief Minister’s post.

Additionally, her non-political background and concerns over nepotism may limit her chances, especially with Assembly elections scheduled for February 2025.

Kejriwal’s resignation comes at a delicate time for AAP, with Assembly elections approaching. His departure could create a leadership vacuum that the party must address quickly.

Moreover, the Election Commission might find it difficult to conduct by-elections in Delhi’s politically charged atmosphere, further complicating the situation.
