The Delhi government is dwelling on providing free travel to individuals identifying as the third gender on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses.
Building upon the existing initiative offering complimentary bus rides to women since October 2019, this potential expansion aims to enhance inclusivity.
A senior transport department official revealed that the social welfare department possesses pertinent data on the third gender population in Delhi, streamlining the implementation of this proposed scheme.
To avail of the benefits, individuals need to present certificates issued by the revenue department.
This development comes after a Delhi High Court directive in April last year, urging the city government to recognize the transgender community as the third gender in DTC bus tickets.
The women and child development department of the Delhi government had previously sanctioned various measures for transgender individuals, including introducing a "third gender" category in job application forms and establishing monitoring cells to safeguard them from abuse.
The proactive steps align with an advisory from the National Human Rights Commission, emphasising the welfare of the transgender community.
According to the 2011 Census, Delhi's transgender population was recorded at 4,213, with only 1,176 enrolled as voters.
The impending extension of free bus travel to the third gender is poised to contribute to their social and economic well-being, promoting an environment of equality and inclusiveness.
