Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra has announced that all meat shops in the national capital will remain closed during the Kanwar Yatra, scheduled from July 11 to 23. However, he did not clarify whether the ban would be limited to the Yatra routes or extend across the entire city.
“Meat shops will remain closed in Delhi during the Kanwar Yatra. This is our decision,” Mishra told reporters. He further claimed that most of these establishments are operating illegally. “These meat shops are illegal anyway and should not be functioning under the law. But during the Kanwar Yatra, they will be especially kept shut. Everyone must follow the law.”
The announcement comes amid growing calls from BJP leaders to uphold the sanctity of the religious pilgrimage. Delhi BJP MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah recently wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting the temporary closure of both liquor and meat shops located along the Kanwar Yatra routes.
In his letter, Marwah stated, “We appeal that meat and liquor shops on the designated routes of the Kanwar Yatra are temporarily shut down so that its sanctity is maintained and there are no untoward incidents.” The Kanwar Yatra, an annual pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Shiva, involves lakhs of devotees walking to collect holy water from the Ganga and offering it at Shiva temples. The routes often pass through various parts of Delhi, and authorities typically take extra measures to ensure order and religious harmony during the event.
