`The extensive door-to-door enumeration survey being conducted under the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) will conclude on August 12, officials concerned with the development confirmed on Thursday.

This survey, which commenced in March 2024, is aimed at determining eligibility for resettlement and rehabilitation under one of India’s largest urban transformation initiatives. While door-to-door visits will formally cease, officials clarified that residents can still submit valid documents directly to DRP and NMDPL offices in Dharavi after contacting the DRP helpline.

More than 87,000 tenements have been surveyed so far, and over 1.2 lakh households have been mapped, including tenements located across Dharavi and extended sites in Kurla, Mulund, Kanjurmarg, Bhandup, and Mukteshwar, the officials said.

The eligibility criteria remain anchored to the cut-off dates: residents who settled in Dharavi on or before 1 January 2000 are entitled to free 350 sq ft flats within Dharavi, while those who arrived between 1 January 2000 and 1 January 2011 may qualify for 300 sq ft homes outside Dharavi under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), either on rent or purchase at nominal rates.

A senior DRP official stated, “No new door-to-door survey visits will be carried out after 12 August for areas already covered. It will be considered that those who did not take part chose to opt out of the government scheme. They can, however, submit their requests later once Draft Annexure-II is announced.”

Authorities have been urging residents to come forward before the deadline. “Those who haven’t participated so far for any reason should do so immediately. Since most of Dharavi has been covered, we don't see the need for further door-to-door visits,” the official added.

Only a few sections, such as Kumbharwada and Compound 13, remain partially uncovered due to disputes involving private landowners or resistance by certain commercial interests. Officials maintained that these zones will also be accounted for, provided residents step forward with necessary documentation.

The Maharashtra cabinet has also approved a major policy decision to accommodate commercial lessees without ownership rights. Under this, such units will be eligible for allocation within the 10 per cent commercial space reserved in the rehabilitation structures, ensuring continuity for Dharavi’s intricate commercial network.

“Whenever any resident calls the helpline with valid documents, teams will immediately include them in the survey list,” the official said.

The Dharavi Redevelopment Project, hailed as the largest urban rejuvenation exercise in India’s history, aims to create an integrated township with co-located residential and commercial facilities, better public amenities, and a strong infrastructural framework to uphold the area's historic work-life culture.

“The Dharavi Redevelopment Project is planned as a self-contained ecosystem, a city within a city. The government doesn’t want anyone to be left out in this housing-for-all, largest urban rejuvenation project in the country’s history,” the official added.
