Tipra Motha Party (TMP) leader Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma has called for an end to the spiralling violence in Manipur, urging the region to prioritise peace for progress.
In a video message posted on 'X' (formerly Twitter), Debbarma condemned the ongoing ethnic violence that escalated after the brutal killings of a 60-year-old woman and a child on 7 November.
"I strongly condemn murder, rape, and any form of violence. A couple of days ago, people asked me why I condemned the November 7 incident. They suggested I remain silent because of political alliances. I will not stay silent on violence. I condemned the rape and parading of two Kuki women in Manipur last year as well," he stated.
Debbarma reaffirmed that murder, rape, and violence are indefensible, labelling perpetrators as criminals irrespective of context.
Criticising the "blame game" within Manipur, he remarked, "What we are seeing in Manipur is a blame game. You did first, and we will do now. If you think the people of Delhi will come and settle our problems, you are living in a fool's paradise. We have to find a solution to our problem within us."
The royal scion urged political leaders to demonstrate statesmanship and prioritise dialogue to end the cycle of brutality.
"Set aside politics and show the statesmanship. Violence will only hold back our children," he said, advocating peace as vital to the northeast’s aspirations to contribute meaningfully to India’s growth.
Debbarma also criticised divisive politics, stating, "Don’t allow foolish politicians to divide us and succeed. I have no vested interest. In Tripura, I have been fighting for the Tiprasa people. In the Tiprasa accord, we demanded a reserved seat for Manipuri people living in Tripura, recognising our century-old ties."
Expressing anguish over the atrocities, he added, "It breaks my heart when I see murder, brutality, and violence in Manipur. Let there be peace in the northeastern state for the prosperity of the region."
