The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has sanctioned ₹202 crore for infrastructure development at Agartala Government Dental College, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha announced during the college’s second foundation day celebration at Town Hall on Thursday.
Dr Saha, reflecting on the establishment of the institution, said, “Opening a dental college has always been my dream. During earlier regimes, we raised this issue many times, but the then government never agreed. Finally, I decided to set it up in the old IGM Hospital building, and within nine months, we inaugurated this 50-seat dental college. Under the PM-DeVINE scheme, ₹202 crore has been sanctioned, and the tender has already been floated.”
The Chief Minister also revealed plans for creating additional posts at the college, highlighting the state government’s commitment to improving healthcare.
Elaborating on healthcare initiatives, Dr Saha said, “We’ve already conducted two free kidney transplants and are preparing for liver and bone marrow transplants. We’re also working to ease the burden on the state hospital by strengthening district hospitals. A Cardiac Care Centre has been opened in Ambassa, Dhalai District.”
Dr Saha further announced plans to establish homeopathy and Ayurvedic colleges in the state, reiterating his administration’s dedication to enhancing medical infrastructure and education.
The ₹202-crore funding under the PM-DeVINE scheme is expected to bolster the dental college’s infrastructure, making it a cornerstone of dental education and healthcare in the state.
