Ladakh is all set to introduce its first electronic and application-based public transport system, which will be known as ‘khorlo’. The initiative is seen as a significant step taken towards eco-friendly and convenient transportation in the region.
Ladakh is an eco-sensitive region, and introducing an eco-friendly transport system will help address its environmental concerns.
Private vehicles are a major source of pollution in Ladakh. The surge in tourism has led to unprecedented levels of pollutants, exacerbating the region's environmental issues.
Chief Executive Councillor of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, Tashi Gyalson, convened a review meeting to assess the progress of the Khorlo scheme.
Highlighting Ladakh’s commitment to becoming carbon neutral, Gyalson noted, “Khorlo is designed to offer eco-friendly and convenient transport options for commuters in Leh town.”
Khorlo for Buddhists means The wheel of existence or life.
He said that this initiative will not only enhance the town's public transportation system but is also expected to generate employment opportunities for local people.
Gyalson emphasised the importance of setting up charging points at various localities, equipped with all necessary facilities to support the new system.
During the meeting, the Deputy Director of the National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIEIT), Phuntsog Toldan, informed the CEC that the Khorlo software application was nearly complete.
He recommended making decisions regarding geo-fencing, fare rates, and payment options. He also suggested conducting trial runs of Khorlo cabs before the official launch date.
In light of the upcoming launch of Khorlo Cabs, the CEC instructed the vehicle company to confirm the arrival of the e-vehicles in Leh and ensure that homologation is completed before the launch date.
