Tension flared in West Bengal’s Nadia district on Wednesday after alleged egg-throwing and slogan-shouting disrupted a party programme attended by Mahua Moitra, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP from Krishnanagar.

The incident occurred in Kaliganj, where Moitra had gone to attend an organisational event at a party office. According to reports, a group of men and women gathered outside the venue during the programme and began shouting slogans, allegedly calling her a “thief.” Moitra claimed that eggs were hurled at the party office, creating a volatile situation in the area for some time.

The MP alleged that the protesters were supporters of the BJP and claimed that many of them were carrying eggs. As tensions escalated, Moitra reportedly began recording the incident on her mobile phone, and the video later surfaced on social media.

Expressing her anger, Moitra said that while opposition parties often speak about upholding constitutional values, such behaviour was being directed at an elected representative. She alleged that an atmosphere conducive to an attack on her had been deliberately created.

Moitra also raised serious questions about the role of the police during the incident. She claimed that despite their presence at the spot, officers failed to intervene promptly or take effective measures to control the situation. Stating that ensuring her safety as an MP is the administration’s responsibility, she said she felt unsafe and has demanded adequate security.

The incident has triggered political sparring in the region. The TMC alleged that the opposition had attempted to engineer unrest in a planned manner. However, there has been no official response from the BJP so far. Police authorities, too, are yet to issue a detailed statement on the episode.

In recent months, several TMC, including former MLAs, councillors, and ministers, have reportedly faced similar egg-throwing protests. With this latest incident, Moitra becomes the newest addition to that list.
