Eleven people were killed and several others went missing as landslides and flash floods wreaked havoc across the twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri on Sunday.
The worst-hit area was Surankote in Poonch, where most of the deaths occurred. Rescue and relief teams are racing against time to trace the missing amid continuing rainfall, officials said.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also cut short his statehood protest in Delhi and returned to Jammu to assess the flood situation in the region.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha reviewed the situation in the rain- and flash flood-hit districts and directed officials to ensure immediate relief measures.
A landslide triggered by torrential rain struck a house in Lower Murrah village of Surankote in the early hours of Sunday, burying all eight occupants under the debris, officials said.
Rescue teams have so far recovered the bodies of 60-year-old Bano Bi and two-year-old Sofian Yassar, while the search for the remaining six missing persons continues.
A 28-year-old woman, Nazia Kousar, was killed when her house collapsed in Noonabandi village. Her husband and three children were rescued and shifted to a nearby hospital.
Meanwhile, four others—two men, one woman and a minor girl—were killed in flood-related incidents across the two districts, taking the total death toll to eight.
