A 65-year-old woman was allegedly raped by a man who had offered her a lift on his two-wheeler near the Bhota area, the police said on Monday.
According to Hamirpur Superintendent of Police Bhagat Singh Thakur, the incident occurred on Saturday night when the elderly woman was coming back home from Jalandhar.
The woman got down at Bhota bus stand around 9 pm and began searching for a taxi. However, she did not have enough money to pay the fare demanded by the taxi drivers. Meanwhile, the accused approached her and offered a lift, claiming he was headed in the same direction, said Bhagat Singh Thakur.
Instead, the accused forcibly took the elderly woman to Jhiraldi forest. While driving at high speed, he lost control over the scooter, causing a minor accident. When the woman protested, he physically assaulted her and then raped her, the SP added.
The accused, a married man who worked as a tractor driver, also switched the woman’s mobile phone to flight mode to prevent her from contacting her family before fleeing the scene. The woman later managed to call her son with help from some bystanders, the SP said.
The police arrived at the location, provided medical assistance to the victim, and arrested the accused, who was found hiding in the forest.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing, the SP confirmed.
