Government schools in Haryana are seeing a decline in enrolment numbers in the ongoing academic session compared to last year.

According to officials, over 1.05 lakh students have so far enrolled in the schools, against nearly 1.25 lakh enrolments during the last session.

The state education department has intensified its efforts to ensure that the enrolment numbers cross at least last year’s figure. Sources in the department stated that the situation was almost identical across the state. The issue was flagged during a meeting in Chandigarh recently.

District Education Officers and District Elementary Education Officers have been directed to focus on enrolment.

Teachers have been advised to reach out to parents to convince them to enrol their children in government-run schools, highlighting the latest facilities being offered by the state government.

While officials remain optimistic that enrolment numbers will pick up once the results of Class 10 are out.

Provisional admissions are being given to the children, and the authorities believe that within a month, this number will surpass last year’s tally.

However, with the peak of farming activities in the state, admissions in government-run schools have not dropped but have been delayed since children are busy assisting their parents in farming activities.

The Haryana government, like the rest of the country, provides free textbooks and uniforms to support quality education infrastructure.

Though the decrease in enrolment is not an isolated event, government schools throughout the country are witnessing a decline in enrolment numbers due to multiple factors, one of which is the quality of education not matching that of private schools.
