A Hisar court on Monday extended the judicial custody of YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested in May on charges of espionage, till September 3.
Jyoti appeared before Judicial Magistrate (first class) Sunil Kumar. The court remanded her to custody till September 3, her lawyer Kumar Mukesh said.
Jyoti, a resident of Hisar, ran a YouTube channel called Travel with JO. She was arrested by the Hisar Police on May 16 from the New Aggarsain Extension and booked under the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
On June 9, the court had rejected her regular bail plea. The police had opposed the bail, arguing that the investigation was still going on.
The police had earlier said there was no proof that Jyoti had access to any military or defence-related information. However, they claimed she was in contact with some people and was aware they were Pakistani intelligence operatives.
The police sources also said she had been in touch with Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a staffer at the Pakistani High Commission, since November 2023. India expelled Danish on May 13 for allegedly indulging in espionage.
In May, the police claimed Pakistani intelligence operatives were trying to develop Jyoti as an “asset.”
