Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Maharashtra government came to power through "vote theft." Speaking to reporters, Raut claimed that this issue, which has been raised in Maharashtra for the past eight months, is now being discussed at both the national and international levels.

Raut said, "...The issue of vote theft has been in Maharashtra for 8 months; we have been raising questions on this. This issue was raised by Uddhav Thackeray, Raj Thackeray, Sharad Pawar, and Congress. Devendra Fadnavis' government came to power only through such vote theft." He added that this same question — "Where did our votes go?"— was now being asked by Rahul Gandhi on a national and international stage.

Earlier on Sunday, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, renewed his attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the BJP. During a press conference in Araria, Bihar, as part of the Voter Adhikar Yatra, he described the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll in Bihar as an "institutionalised way" of stealing votes.

Gandhi alleged a "partnership" between the ECI and the BJP, stating, "In Bihar, SIR is an institutionalised way for vote theft. Lakhs of voters’ names were deleted; the Opposition is complaining, but the BJP has not complained even once because there is a partnership between the Election Commission, the Election Commissioner and the BJP." He said that the Opposition would not allow the BJP and the ECI to steal elections in Bihar. He also claimed that the ECI had failed to provide a correct voter list in Maharashtra, Haryana, and Karnataka.
